Frances Pickering is a textile artist and author of two books, Page After Page (October 2009) and Under The Cover (August 2012), who loves experimenting and using unorthodox methods to create her beautiful stitched and decorated textile and mixed-media books. Starting with very cheap and unpromising materials, she loves to recycle and strives to turn these unusual beginnings into something of worth.
Though I do use machine embroidery, mostly for practical reasons, to stitch background layers together or to work on outlines, it is hand stitching I love the most. Feeling the fabric and thread as I stitch connects me with my work more than any other process. I find, no matter how much I experiment, my work always ends up being a book and each one is a journey – who knows where my next book will take me.
An experienced teacher of machine embroidery and stitched textiles, she has had work published in various textile magazines, most recently in Stitch magazine, issue 81, Feb/Mar 2013.
Frances will be transferring her studio to The Bramble Patch as part of our Open Studios season on Tuesday, 13 and Wednesday, 14 August 2013. She will also be teaching a new two-day workshop, Transferred to the Cover, starting Friday, 27 September.
