March is always when we start to believe that winter might actually end this year, and we dare to dream of sunshine, sand, summer holidays and sailing, so it seems appropriate to round up some of the latest nautical and shore themed fabrics in the shop.
In fresh and breezy red, white and blue, the Ahoy range includes plenty of seaside motifs including yachts, seagulls, lighthouses, life preservers and anchors mixed up with co-ordinating spots, deckchair stripes and marbled blenders for contrast with the busy prints.
This collection would make lovely seaside-themed quilts, cushions and other decorative items for beach huts (we wish!), summer houses or in the home.
The Boat House
A slightly more modern take on nautical style, The Boat House designed by Sweetwater for Moda Fabrics is a graphic-led range with plenty of contrast in its navy, red, white and duck-egg blue palette. This collection is a mix of polka dots, stripes and overall small graphic designs along with two feature prints: semaphore flags or random numbers.
As well as precut formats like jelly rolls and charm packs, we also have two of the designs in a heavier cotton canvas which would make fabulous bags for beach or holidays!
If you’re looking for something more subtle and understated, the Lakeside Gatherings collection from Primitive Gatherings for Moda may fit the bill. Lakeside Gatherings is a traditionally styled collection featuring mainly ditsy all-over prints including anchors, moons, stars, spots and stripes in a neutral palette of deep navy, white, and mid-grey with a splash of lemony-yellow for zest. With its understated prints, this range will work beautifully for traditional quilt designs – it has a nautical slant without being an overt ‘novelty’ range.
We have Lakeside Gatherings in charm packs and jelly rolls as well as our usual fat quarters and off the bolt.
Following on with the same subtle palette is Lakeside Gatherings Wovens, also by Primitive Gatherings. These new checks and stripes are woven in rather than printed, and the fabrics are consequently slightly thicker and softer than their print cousins, with a slightly brushed finish. As well as navy, grey and lemon, the wovens also bring in a touch of deep blue and cream for a slightly warmer look overall. The patterns include pinstripes and ticking stripes, as well as a variety of checks, from small ginghams to tartan styles.
For an idea of the kind of lovely soft and subtle quilt these fabrics can be made into, why not check out our Lakeside Plaids Quilt kit?
Finally, if the navy and cream of the Lakeside Wovens is a bit too neutral, why not mix them up with some designs from the Petite Wovens collection by French General for Moda? The Petite Wovens are a similar soft fabric with the designs woven in, and share a spread of stripes, checks and plaids, but this time in peachy cream, beige, soft red and chocolate brown. Combining fabrics from Lakeside Wovens with Petite Wovens would create a fabulous antique style quilt that still retains a flavour of the seaside in its colour palette.
We also have Petite Wovens available in charm pack and layer cakes formats.
That’s all for now – but remember this is just a tiny selection of the fabrics we have in the shop at the moment. We get new ranges in every week, so do check back to the fabric page of our online shop, which is kept up-to-date as new fabrics arrive, or pop into the shop if you’re nearby.
