Rectangles are the most versatile ruler shape as you can use them for cutting strips as well as all sorts of shapes, including angled ones. With practice, they can be used for squaring up blocks as well.

We recommend every quilter have at least one large rectangular ruler for cutting strips and basic patch shapes – the 6 1/2" x  24 1/2" or 8" x 24" rulers are ideal as a first purchase.
